Module Overview: <\/strong>This module introduces students to the fundamental concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and demonstrates how GIS is applied in real-world contexts to support decision-making and problem-solving. Through hands-on experience with tools such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcCatalog, and ArcToolbox, students will learn to analyze, manage, and present spatial data effectively. Throughout the course, students will develop a strong understanding of vector and raster data formats, learn how to manage spatial databases, and produce well-designed map layouts. They will also apply basic spatial analysis techniques and explore methods for communicating information through data visualization. By the end of the module, each student will develop and present a StoryMap to showcase a GIS project of their choice, integrating the skills and knowledge acquired during the course.<\/p>

Assignment:<\/strong> Students will be given assignments based on in-class activities, such as (1) importing data with latitude and longitude coordinates in GIS to create maps, and (2) importing Excel or other data formats into GIS and joining them with Global or Local maps to produce new maps.<\/p>

Group GIS Project: <\/strong>Students will form groups of 3 to 4 and collaboratively work on a GIS-based project related to Earth System Science. Each group will select a topic in consultation with the instructor, ensuring the project integrates relevant GIS data from authoritative sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau, NOAA, NASA, USGS, the Department of Labor, the World Bank, and the United Nations. Grading will be based on several criteria, including the quality and design of maps, the depth of data analysis, the level of team collaboration and effort, and the effectiveness of the final presentation. Students are also encouraged to participate in peer feedback sessions and actively engage in discussions following each group\u2019s presentation.<\/p>
